Posted June 17th, 2008 - A group of Sikhs protesters attacked the Mumbai MTV office alleging misrepresentation of their community in a recent poster to promote the music channels new career-based reality show ‘On the Job.’

One of the MTV staffers got minor injuries.

The poster, which was put up all through Mumbai to promote the show, was also placed outside the office.

In a recent publicity campaign, the channel has used the visual of a Sikh man peeping into a room where a woman is massaging a man, and the tagline of the poster was ‘Jobs your parents won’t understand.’

Mr. Sunil Deshmukh
, senior police inspector of Matunga police station, said, “The poster has offended members of the Sikh community. They reached to office to ask MTV to pull down the hoardings but there was an argument which later led to stone throwing and destruction of property.”

Around sixty nine members of the Sikh community were detained by the Bhoiwada police for various assaults, including unlawful assembly, but were taken to Matunga police station due to space shortage.

“They have now been released on bail,” said Mr. Sunil Deshmukh.

Aashish Patil, general manager of MTV India said, “We have no idea about their objective or motive behind this act. We have lodged a complaint with the necessary law enforcement agency.”

The protesters entered the office of the music channel around 3.30 pm and went on rampage. They tore posters, broke window panes,  office property and equipment in the protest.

An MTV staffer told, “They overturned the reception desk and even threw computers and other equipment inside the office. We are completely taken aback.”

Gurmukh-------->infinity

man mukh soochay jaanee-ahi gurmukh jinaa gi-aan. Those who become Gurmukh, and obtain spiritual wisdom-their minds and mouths are known to be pure. satgur agai ardaas kar saajan day-ay milaa-ay. Offer your most sincere prayers to the True Guru, so that He may unite you with your Best Friend. saajan mili-ai sukh paa-i-aa jamdoot mu-ay bikh khaa-ay. Meeting your Best Friend, you shall find peace; the Messenger of Death shall take poison and die. manmukh karam karay ahaNkaaree sabh dukho dukh kamaa-ay. The self-willed manmukh does deeds in egotism; he earns only pain and more pain. gurmukh hovai so ayko jaanai ayko sayv sukh paavni-aa. One who becomes Gurmukh knows only the One. Serving the One, peace is obtained. The actions in Mumbai were a product of impulsive reactions to ego and converse or anti to Gurmukh. One continuing theme in the Siri Guru Granth Sahib in reference to Gurmukh is peace and non impulsive self centered action. A Manmukh vibration overwelmed them and they lost sight of Guru, they lost Gurmukh. Now their Manmukh causes them to have to worry about jail, they have lost credibility in their community and MTV may have gained credibility, not that I have any Manmukh feelings towards MTV. It is my hope that they refocus on Gurmukh, thus regain credibility and the credibility of their position, then thier community will find.........Gurmukh. The Sikhs in Mumbai had valid concerns and feelings in reference to the MTV advertisement. However their concerns and feelings were overwhelmingly channeled through Manmukh which led to offensive violent Manmukh action. Offensive actions or Manmukh should never be confused with defensive action or heroic movements. One such defensive action was the protection of Central Asia by Guru Gobind Singh and Blessed Saints, which obviously was Gurmukh motivated and driven. Had the group of Sikhs in Mumbai been able to channel their valid feelings through Gurmukh, they quite possibly would have reduced to tears and surely engaged in prayer and meditation. Instead of heading headfirst into Manmukh confrontation Some examples of actions that would be Gurmukh in nature 1. Drafting letters to MTV and the advertising industry explaining your feelings, heartfelt communication goes along way 2. Contemplating and possibly pursuing legal or legislative action 3. Inviting the media as well as MTV into the Gudwara and explaining your world to them candidly and how you really feel when you see those ads. I am sure they are passionate about something in their life. True Guru Ka Langar goes a long way in uniting peoples of differing opinions and helped even Guru and Maharaja obtain understanding and friendship. I am sure after prayer and meditation additional Gurmukh actions could be thought of. I would like to specifically address one specific part of the Siri Guru Granth Sahib that I quoted above. It seems descriptive metaphor and simily terms are sometimes confused with physical harm or endorsed violence. "the Messenger of Death shall take poison and die." What is this messenger of death? None other than Manmukh. Do we wish people who engage in or in reality are stuck in Manmukh to take poison and die, surely not. We hope and pray for their speedy metamorphosis and success into Gurmukh. As a butterfly takes flight from its cocoon, it is our hope that Gurmukh spreads its wings unto infinity. The quotation is an illustration purely to illicit a feeling and desire for the end of Manmukh, for example the end of hate, hurt, pain, impurity. Gurmukh is the only way for Manmukh to end. Our best friend that the Guru helps us find and meet is none other than.....Gurmukh. Gurmukh is peace, peace is infinite wisdom, infinite wisdom is Gurmukh and through peace, Manmukh shall pass away. Manmukh can even cause others minds to be blinded from Gurmukh, thus causing further Manmukh. Possibly the case in Mumbai. Conversely Gurmukh action can cause others to see Gurmukh, further spreading Gurmukh. Conflict resolution is always Gurmukh Hate or anger for whatever reason is never Gurmukh. In Divine Love and Light May the Guru find way to each and every creation Wahe Guru

Violence makes us all look bad

I'm sure MTV's offenses were great, as they usually are, however any use of violence makes us all look really bad. We as Sikhs should be thought of as the protectors of the people not the threateners of people. All of our protests should be civil and should reflect the primitive behaviors of others not ourselves. I think there are some leaders trying to militarize young Sikhs and then use them to cause trouble. A true soldier fights for their master and our master is God, therefore we should remind people of God, not cause them fear and injury.

Peace

Is she really beautiful that Sikh guy losed his consciousness that he peeped to see her !

Waheguru ji Ka Khalsa

Waheguru ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru ji Ki Fateh. Firstly I would like to say that it is high time for Sikhs across the world to bear such attacks on our identity. Its time for the world to realize we are no less and much better than most of the people. However firstly we have to begin with self improvement and discipline as due to our rare identity we can be identified easily. Also we have to unite as a community as this is one thing that lacs in our community we can not tolerate our brother next door. I read a excellent saying in this regard outside Bangla Sahib Gurudwara, New Delhi. “ Je Sikh Sikh nu na Mare ta Kaum Kde na Hare” Also instead of attacking people we should start by educating people around what we are and what our religion is. For this we ourself need to be more educated and always present proper Facts and Figures before the Masses. Our so called leaders also have a duty other than filling there bank accounts and playing politics, they should take corrective measures’ by working along with the government and media to improve the identity. Firstly there should be a complete ban on a non Sikh Playing a role of a Sikh as they always tend to make a funny character out of him. Also there should be censor on any media act involving the community in Bad image and there should be no compromise of any sot in this regard. If we start by taking such small steps only then we will be able to achieve our desired Goals.

I think its the time for all

I think its the time for all the surds to unite n raise their voice against this steriotyped n rascial media n channels like this who have been mocking at sikhism since a long time. But violence would have a bad impact on our image. So its better to take a strong action against these rascism against sikhs in the movies and other tv channels but only after discussing with the sikhs all over. The action should be peacefull but should have a long impact. All the sikh Mps should introduce a bill in the Parliament so that such type of rascism should be made a severe crime so that one should be scared while committing it. So i appeal all u surds to unite and do something bout this. Its high time now.....

Thanks for the link

Thanks for the link Ranvir, I will definitely get in touch with MTV's parent company. I don't see MTV India taking any action and will just brush it under the carpet.

MTV

Its a good way for MTV to go on the defensive. Make the story about the Sikhs attacking them. Nice tactics. It gives them a means to not answer the real underlying racism that exists. Its insightful too that the media focuses on the minor violence that may have occured rather than the mass undermining of Sikhs that does exist in the Indian media and possibly in Indian culture. In the United States, undermining stereotypes where imposed on African Americans for hundreds of years from which they still suffer as a affect today. My belief is that some European Americans felt they had to do that because they felt the need to feel superior. I see similarities here. Anyone got more information on this? A example of the material would be useful. I will contact MTV myself and I reckon you all should do the same. MTV is owned by Viacom and they can be contacted here - http://www.viacom.com/contact/Pages/default.aspx
